In a recent update, Gmail added folders to their email system and many emails get sent to one of these new folders which may not be easy to see on a phone.
When I tested activating folders, my phone's home screen told me there were just a few emails received and when I clicked into my Gmail and then looked in the folders there were more emails that Google had decided were not important. One of these emails was a notification from Australia Post of a delivery expected that day, which I did consider important, even if Google didn't.
My solution was to turn the folders off in the settings for my Gmail account and put myself back in charge of what emails that I could see and read.
